SEOUL, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co.,
the world's third-largest shipyard, said Sunday that it won orders to build 12
ships worth of 2.3 billion U.S. dollars this month, Yonhap reported..
The company said in the statement that nine very large oil tankers, one
drill ship and two bulk carriers are to be built. However, the shipbuilder did
not provide comparable figures from previous years.
In the first six months of this year, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine
Engineering has won orders valued at 7.56 billion dollars to build 43 ships,
which accounts for 43.2 percent of its yearly target of 17.5 billion dollars
worth of orders.
According to Yonhap, shipyards in South Korea, the world's largest
shipbuilding nation, have won record orders over the past few years as demand
for vessels to carry fuel and consumer goods has surpassed supply.
